Whenever sophomore shooting guard Emma Spinelli is in the game for Shade, the Panthers have a better-than-average shot at winning the contest.
But when you take Spinelli out of the game, the rest of the Panthers usually follow suit.
With Shade clinging to a one-point lead over Halifax midway through the fourth quarter of their PIAA Class A second-round matchup on Wednesday, Spinelli fouled out of the contest.
And with its star player out of the game, Shade couldn’t keep up with Halifax as the Wildcats went on a run to pull out a 63-55 victory at Big Spring High School.
District 3 champ Halifax (21-6) got out to a sizeable lead when the Wildcats outscored District 6 runner-up Shade (22-7) 37-23 in the first half.
Spinelli, already a 1,000-point scorer for the Panthers, brought her team back in the third quarter when she scored eight points in the period to get Shade to within seven at 48-41.
However, Spinelli fouled out with 5:06 remaining in the game and Shade leading 50-49. Afterwards, Halifax went on a 14-5 run to finish out the game.
Despite fouling out, Spinelli finished with a game-high 31 points and six steals for Shade.
Morgan Cox tallied 18 points and Kylee Sorichetti had 16 to lead Halifax. Sorichetti also had 14 rebounds and five steals for the Wildcats.
Halifax next faces Phil-Mont Christian in Saturday’s quarterfinals at a site and time to be determined.
The site and time for that game will be anounced later today.
