High School Basketball: District 4 playoff seedings announced

The District 4 basketball committee released the seeds and playoff pairings Sunday for the upcoming tournaments.

In all, six tournaments will take place over the next two weeks (three on the boys' side and three on the girls' side). Six different schools earned No. 1 seeds. In boys' action, Mifflinburg (21-1) is No. 1 in Class AAA, Wellsboro (21-1) grabbed the top spot in AA, and Mansfield (19-3) is first in Class A.

On the girls' side, Shamokin (21-1) is No. 1 in Class AAA, Sayre (22-0) is tops in AA, and Cowanesque Valley is No. 1 in A. The Sayre girls are the only undefeated team in District 4.

The Class A tournament on the boys' side is the only one that doesn't feature a team from The Daily Item coverage area.

Action begins Tuesday with play-in games in both of the Class AA tournaments and the girls' Class A tournament.

All quarterfinal games will be played no later than Saturday.

There are some intriguing matchups in the quarterfinals. In the Class AA boys' bracket, Heartland Athletic Conference Division II rivals Lewisburg and Hughesville meet Saturday at Milton High School at 1. Those teams split their two regular-season meetings.

In the girls' AAA bracket, Danville takes on a surging Mifflinburg team at Shikellamy on Thursday at 6.

In the girls' AA playoffs, two 17-5 teams collide when South Williamsport meets Loyalsock at Montoursville High School on Friday at 7:30.

The Class AAA boys final could see a rematch of last year's final between Danville (the eventual champ) and Mifflinburg.

The semifinals and finals will all be played next week at sites and times to be announced. The state playoffs begin with play-in games on Tuesday, March 8, with all of the first-round games taking place the following Friday or Saturday.

In Class AAA (boys and girls), two teams from District 4 qualify for states. In Class AA (boys and girls), three teams make it to states, and in Class A (boys and girls), four teams advance to states.

The state championship games will be played Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center.
