JERSEY SHORE -- Good teams often get tested by adversity, great teams often bounce back. Jersey Shore will need to bounce back after being upset 3-2 by Mifflinburg on Monday.

The Wildcats moved their record to 9-7 (9-7 Susquehanna Valley League) and need only one more win to qualify for the District 4 playoffs. Jersey Shore, on the other hand, fell to 13-2 (overall and SVL) and now will have to beat Selinsgrove on Wednesday to take the SVL lead.

"Sometimes late in the year it is good to have a game like this," said Jersey Shore coach Shawn Weaver. "They realize they can't relax, you have to stay focused for 21 outs. It could be a good thing, it doesn't feel like it is right now, but it could be."

Jersey Shore appeared to have its focus early as lead-off batter Derek Smith roped a single into right field. Smith was then picked off two pitches later. On the following pitch, Smith would have been driven home as Lance White hit a triple into the right-center gap. Kyle Miller then came to the plate and hit White home to give the Bulldogs the early lead.

"This is the first game we didn't play fundamental baseball," said Weaver. "We weren't getting bunts down and a runner got picked off, which hurt us."

Travis Moyer got things rolling for the Wildcats with a lead-off single. Moyer was then bunted over to second and stole third. Smith made up for his base-running mistake by making a great play on a ball hit up the middle to prevent Moyer from reaching home.

The Wildcats' Brandon Hendrix then found his control the following inning, getting three consecutive batters out.

"I knew I could do it," Hendrix said. "I just needed to relax and hit my spots."

The Wildcats started the bottom of the second by loading the bases off of two singles and a hit batter. Bulldogs hurler Mitch Potter then fanned the next two and was able to get the third to ground out.

"I knew I had my stuff working," Potter said.

Jersey Shore was able to get another run in the top of the fourth after Potter hit a triple into left. On the next pitch, Daren Welsh plated Potter with a double into right-center. Hendrix regrouped and ended the brief rally by whiffing the next hitter.

"They hit the ball," said Mifflinburg coach Tom Church. "Our kids just hung with it. I told them we have five more games and we need two. They came out to play."

The Wildcats' ability to hang with the Bulldogs paid off in the bottom of the fourth. Jim Brobst started things off with a single. Brobst then stole second and was plated when Alex Shambach hit a single into center field. Phil Rathfon plated Shambach on a fielder's choice that was hit up the middle.

The game headed into the top of the fifth knotted at 2. Hendrix wasted no time getting to work, striking out the first batter and getting the next two to ground out.

"We knew these guys were a good ball club," said Weaver. "Hendrix is a good pitcher."
