BASEBALL
MIFFLINBURG -- Milton's six-run fifth inning wasn't enough, as Mifflinburg answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-6 Susquehanna Valley League victory Wednesday and qualify for the District 4 playoffs.
Milton (2-15 overall and SVL) was down 5-0 entering the fifth, but a three-run triple by Tony Fannick and a two-run double by Andy Kerstetter helped give the Black Panthers a one-run lead.
A double by Jimmy Brobst started the bottom half of the fifth for Mifflinburg (10-7, 10-7). Brobst then stole third and Phil Rathfon walked before John Miller hit a sacrifice fly to plate Brobst with the tying run.
Rathfon later stole third and scored the winning run on Travis Moyer's RBI single.
Moyer finished 3-for-3 and stole three bases, while Rathfon, Curt Zimmerman and Brandon Hendrix each finished with two hits for the Wildcats.
Ethan Ernst took the loss for Warrior Run (1-16, 1-16), also going the distance, and was the lone Defender with multiple hits in the contest.
Danville 9, Warrior Run 0
DANVILLE -- The Ironmen notched their 10th win of the season and simultaneously qualified for the District 4 playoffs, thanks to a complete game five-hitter from pitcher Andrew Shoop and a three-hit performance by shortstop Jake Gronsky. Shoop struck out five with just one walk for Danville (10-7 overall and SVL), while Gronsky doubled, tripled and drove in two runs.
Montoursville 16, Lewisburg 1 (5 innings)
LEWISBURG -- Brothers Curtis and Chad Jacobson had big days as the Warriors took the lopsided SVL win. The brothers went a combined 5-for-7 from the plate.
Montoursville is 12-3 overall and SVL, while Lewisburg is 2-13, 2-13.
Shikellamy 12, Hughesville 2
HUGHESVILLE -- J.A. Brosious went 2-for-2, hit a two-run home run in the sixth and scored three times as the Braves ran away for the SVL win.
Shikellamy improves to 12-4 overall and in league play. Hughesville is 9-8, 9-8.
Williams Valley 11, Lourdes Reg. 1 (5 inn.)
TOWER CITY -- A four-run first inning put the Red Raiders into a hole they couldn't get out of as they fell in the Schuylkill League matchup. A single by Mike Bastian in the fourth gave Lourdes its lone run.
SOFTBALL
Lewisburg 4, Midd-West 2
MIDDLEBURG -- Jessica Kline's two-run single in the sixth inning was the hit that the Green Dragons needed to comeback and take the non-league win.
Midd-West (9-8), which needs to win one of its last three games to reach the District 4 playoffs, took a 2-0 lead in the fifth with help from Sam Moyer's RBI single.
Behind Kline's single, Lewisburg (6-10) then plated four runs in the sixth to take the lead and the win. Kline also picked up the complete-game win for the Green Dragons by striking out five and limiting the Mustangs to four hits.
Milton 14, Selinsgrove 2
SELINSGROVE -- The Black Panthers crushed the ball and collected 21 hits to crush the Seals in a Susquehanna Valley League game.
Nicole Smith held Selinsgrove (3-13 overall and SVL) to only two runs on three hits and went 2-for-3 with a double and triple.
Aly Hoover went 2-for-4 with a home run to lead Milton (17-0, 15-0 SVL).
Halifax 10, Greenwood 0 (5 innings)
HALIFAX -- Behind a 13-hit attack, Halifax cruised to the Tri-Valley League win.
Greenwood falls to 6-12 overall and TVL, while Halifax improves to 11-6, 9-4.
Central Columbia 3, Nanticoke 2
ALMEDIA -- Michelle Creveling's two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Blue Jays the non-league victory.
Bridgette Clarke went 2-for-3 and hit a solo home run in the fourth for Central (17-1), which defeated a Nanticoke team that is tied with Hazleton atop the highly competitive Wyoming Valley West Division I standings.
Williams Valley 11, Lourdes Reg. 1 (6 inn.)
TOWER CITY -- Kaila Deitrich threw a two-hitter for the Vikings, with one of those hits accounting for Kelsey Kenney's 100th career hit for the Red Raiders who fell in the Schuylkill League matchup. Kelli Martz added a double for Lourdes.
BOYS TRACK
TVL Meet
COVE -- Greenwood had four first-place finishers and five wins to finish third with 94 points in the Tri-Valley League meet held at Susquenita High School. Juniata won with 108 points and Millersburg was second with 98.
Winners for Greenwood were Zach Troutman in the 100 (12.08 seconds), Evan Roush in the long jump (42 feet, 1/2 inch), Chris Boyer in the shot put (42-11) and Matt Lehman in the discus (127-5) and javelin (154-9).
Fourth-place East Juniata (56) got three firsts, two from Tyler Erhard (1,600, 3,200) and Evan Landis in the long jump.
GIRLS TRACK
TVL Meet
COVE -- With nine wins, Greenwood ran away to win the title in the Tri-Valley League meet at Susquenita High School. The Wildcats had 133 points to 90 for runner-up Millersburg. East Juniata was third with 82 points.
Getting the wins for Greenwood were Elissa Fronk in the 100 and 200, Andi Matter in the 400 and 800, Carmen Dressler in the 100 hurdles and Staci Osmolenski in the pole vault. The Wildcats' 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams also came away from the meet victoriously.
The Tigers got wins from Alastasia McDonwell in the 1,600 and 3,200, plus Alicia Lauver in the long jump and Sarah Brotzman in the shot put and discus.
BOYS TENNIS
District 4 doubles Tourn.
BLOOMSBURG -- Teams from Danville and Lewisburg are among the top eight seeds for the District 4 doubles tournament that begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bloomsburg University.
Danville's team of Peter Blankenship and Greg Bowser are seeded third, while Lewisburg's team of Harry Lesher and Mitch Smyth are seeded eighth.
The semifinals and finals are Monday beginning at 2 p.m. The top two teams advance to the PIAA doubles tournament May 23 and 24 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
