DANVILLE -- A two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning helped lead Danville past Shamokin/Mount Carmel 6-1 at Danville High School on Wednesday night in Susquehanna Valley American Legion League play.
Danville (10-3, 8-1 SVL) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Brett Reichard scored on a double to center by Jake Gronsky.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the third, Shamokin/MC (3-8, 2-6) tied the game in the fourth when Matt Moroz reached on a two-base error and then scored on Mitch Miller's RBI single to left.
In Danville's half of the fourth, Miller committed a throwing error with two outs after Todd Deroba had doubled to left. Zach LeVan hit a grounder to Miller, whose throw sailed past first baseman Jordan Sinopoli, allowing Deroba to score as Danville took a 2-1 lead.
Reichard then hit a shot off pitcher Matt Moroz's foot to put runners at first and second. Cody Herman followed with an RBI single to score LeVan, and Reichard scored on a pass ball as Danville plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead.
Danville added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Smith doubled to right to lead off the inning, stole third and came home on a Dan Winnie sacrifice fly. Kyle Mundy then struck out, but the ball got past Shamokin/MC catcher Jeremy Yacobacci, who threw the ball over the first baseman into right field, allowing Mundy to end up at second. He scored to make it 6-1 on an RBI single by Deroba.
Deroba and Reichard each had two RBIs as Deroba went 2-for-2 and Reichard was 2-for-3.
"We hadn't jelled yet as a unit and it was the second game of the season," Harold Albertson, manager of the Danville Legion team, said on the difference between Wednesday night's game and the loss they suffered to Shamokin/MC earlier in the year. "We had them down six to nothing, they battled back in that game. They're a scrappy bunch and they're not a bad ball team. They're better than their records indicates. That throwing error in the fourth was big. It kept the inning going for us and sometimes you have to take those runs any way you can get them."
Moroz held Danville in check for the first three innings as he allowed just three hits and a run.
"Matt pitched a nice game for us," Shamokin/MC manager Joe Varno said. "He got ahead in the count and he really didn't walk too many guys and he mixed his pitches up.
"They got a couple of hits when they needed them and we had a play or two with two outs and we threw the one away and that was the difference in the game. They have a quick runner (LeVan) and you have to charge the ball and Miller tried to throw on the run, but that error was the whole game."Shamokin/MC had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but a diving stop by second baseman Reichard turned what looked like a sure single into a game-ending double play.
