SUNBURY -- After her team had dominated play for much of the first half and had eight penalty corners but no goals to show for it, Shikellamy coach Pam Miller was getting frustrated with her team.
"Lewisburg has a really good team," Miller said. "They are really quick to the ball and you've got to want the ball more than they do and you've got to go get it."
Miller's frustration ebbed after Sam Balonis served up Shikellamy's ninth corner of the game as it resulted in the only goal either the Braves or Lewisburg would see.
Balonis' corner found its way to the stick of Chelsea Miller and then to Haile Derr, who blasted the ball into the cage with 6 minutes and 14 seconds left in the first half to give Shikellamy a 1-0 victory over Lewisburg in Heartland Athletic Conference Division I action on Thursday.
"It is a good win. We played Lewisburg earlier in the season and we beat them 2-0," Miller said. "This is the first time in quite a while where we beat Lewisburg twice in one season."
Most of the corner plays Shikellamy (12-1-2, 6-1-2 HAC-I) had early in the game didn't result in any substantial scoring opportunities. However, each corner got Shikellamy a little bit closer to getting a ball in the cage.
After the eighth corner, Miller gave the Braves their first real scoring opportunity with 9:40 left until halftime by firing a hard shot that ended up wide left of the cage.
Shikellamy's ensuing scoring chance that came from Audrey Rohrbach three minutes later may not have resulted in a goal, but it did produce the Braves' ninth penalty corner of the game and, soon after that, Derr's game-winning goal.
"We were trying to do too much with the corners instead of taking a direct shot," said coach Miller of her team's inability to score off its corners.
Holding onto a 1-0 lead became difficult for Shikellamy in the second half as Lewisburg (8-6-2, 4-5) picked up its play in a concentrated effort to score the tying goal.
Limited to one shot in the first half, the Green Dragons peppered Braves goalkeeper Kami Heim with 14 shots in the second half and came close to scoring the equalizer several times.
"The pressure in the second half was good and I want them to do that every time we play," Lewisburg coach Betsy Monus said. "They played a fantastic game and it was an enjoy to watch them. They did a lot of things really well, but we just couldn't finish."
Shikellamy's defense bent but it didn't break in the second half under Lewisburg's pressure. Miller made sure of that by calling a pair of timeouts when the Green Dragons' began zeroing in on the cage.
"We tried to go into the second half like it was a 0-0 game. You don't want to take a 1-0 lead and sit on it," Miller said. "There were times in the second half where the girls were a little sluggish.
"Towards the end, especially in the last 10 minutes, they picked it up and played a lot better and they finished well," added Miller.
