Daily Item names 2012 high school football all-stars

SELINSGROVE  - If the 2012 edition of The Daily Item All-Stars were not a fictional team, the quarterback would find a familiar downfield target. But Bloomsburg quarterback Ricky Klingerman, while knowing he could make big plays with teammate and cousin wide receiver John Klingerman, the Panthers’ junior first-year starter might be just as content to hand the ball off to one of his elite running backs.

Ricky Klingerman is joined in the backfield on this year’s team by running backs Adam Feudale, Southern Columbia; Lucas Klingerman, Mount Carmel (no relation to Ricky and John); and Brandon Smith, Lewisburg.

Flanked opposite John Klingerman is Mount Carmel wide receiver Rob Varano. Providing the protection up front are linemen Mike Schiccatano, Mount Carmel; Nazar Mironenko, Mifflinburg; Harley Stahl, Selinsgrove; Kyle Santorine, Lewisburg; and Ryan Cherwinski, Southern Columbia.

The first-team tight end is Danville’s Bret Berg and the placekicker is Danville’s Shayne Riley.

Some familiar names dot the first-team on defense.

Named first-teamers on both sides of the ball are linemen Mironenko and Stahl, and Smith at linebacker and Berg at defensive back. Smith was the unanimous choice as both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year.

The other first-team defensive linemen are Jake Becker, Southern, and Eric Joraskie, Mount Carmel. The linebackers, in addition to Smith, are Ryan Solomon, Milton; Eric Haney, Danville; Nick Sebasovich, Shikellamy; and Mike Walter, Selinsgrove. The other first-team defensive backs are Cale Rice, Danville; Tyler Krebs, Selinsgrove; and Joe Kleman, Southern.

Krebs is also the first-team punter; Cole Rickert, Line Mountain, is the choice at Athlete; and Lucas Klingerman is the first-team return man.

Danville’s Jim Keiser and Selinsgrove’s Dave Hess are the Coaches of the Year.

Of the 15 schools included in the selections 10 had players selected to the first team, and 13 had at least one player listed on either the first- or second-teams. All of the teams are represented on the Honorable Mention list. The teams were selected by a vote of The Daily Item sports staff, with the help of nominations from all 15 coaches.
