LOCK HAVEN -- The Bloomsburg University softball team will live to play another day.
After a 1-1 opening day with a win over IUP and a loss to Lock Haven, the Huskies posted a 2-0 mark Friday at Lawrence Field in the PSAC Championships.
Bloomsburg opened with a 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg before advancing to today's play with its second win over IUP by a final of 6-0.
In the opening-game win, the Huskies used hustle to get the job done.
With the two teams matching each other with zeros on the board through four-and-a-half innings, Mifflinburg grad Tiff Corliss came up with a one-out single.
Bloom coach Jan Hutchinson made the key move when she inserted Casey Massimini as a pinch-runner at second base.
With two outs, Tara Reed put the ball in play, beat it out at first base for an infield single, and Massimini never stopped as she scored the game's only run.
"Since there were two outs, I knew that I was just running hard on contact," explained Massimini. "I didn't know if it went through or not, but coach gave me the wave so I just kept going. ... It surprised me when I got to the plate that I didn't have to slide."
As for making the decision to send Massimini all the way from second, Hutchinson said it was simply determined by the play at first base.
"In that situation, where we knew it was going to be a late throw to first base, you have to take a chance," said Hutchinson. "We took the chance and it worked out for us."
While the Bloom bats weren't exactly hot, senior hurler Ashley Lynn was sizzling. For the game Lynn scattered three hits, walking none and striking out 10.
"It (the loss to Lock Haven) was tough, but we knew although our bats weren't really coming around for us, we felt we had to bounce back," said Lynn, a Danville graduate. "I tried to get them off balance (Friday) by throwing a lot of rise balls. He (the umpire) was giving me a lot of low and away, so I tried to use the fastball a little off the plate and I was fortunate to get a lot of calls."
While the Huskies did it by playing small ball and getting some clutch hits in the first game, they used the long ball in the second win.
In the top of the first, they jumped on IUP starter Erin Holloway for a single by Nikki Shiko (Southern Columbia), followed by back-to-back home runs off the bats of Mandy Koch and Lori Neyhard. With the two blasts, the Huskies led 3-0 and never looked back.
Now 3-1 in the tournament, the Huskies will be right back in action this morning when they face Kutztown in a survival game. The winner of that game will face unbeaten Lock Haven in the first of two possible championship games.
