College sports notebook: Bison men's soccer on a roll

LEWISBURG — The streaking Bucknell men’s soccer team looks to continue its recent run of success tonight coming off a strange weekend.

The Bison, who have won five games in a row, host St. Joe’s tonight at 7 at Emmitt Field, attempting to extend their winning streak and also a lengthy shutout streak. Bucknell’s latest win came Sunday afternoon, 1-0 at Lehigh in the Patriot League opener, to improve to 5-1-2 overall.

The Bison had a wild weekend to be sure. On Saturday they traveled to Bethlehem to take on the Mountain Hawks, but a heavy storm dumped several inches of rain on the field. So Bucknell made the trip back to Lehigh on Sunday. On the way home after the game, the team bus ended up in a ditch on the side of highway. No one was injured, coach Brendan Nash said.

“This was a tough week mentally for the guys, so it is gratifying to come home with a league win,” said Nash.

Bucknell rides a five-game win streak into tonight’s game, its longest win streak since 2009 when the Bison won six in a row. In addition, the Bison have not allowed a goal in 381 minutes and seven seconds. The program record is 559 minutes, 40 seconds from 1983.

McGUNNIN’: Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has thrived in Bill O’Brien’s new offense and he turned in one of his best performances in a Nittany Lion uniform in Saturday’s win over Temple.

McGloin, a former walk-on from West Scranton, threw for a career-best 318 yards, the third 300-yard passing game of his career. Only Kerry Collins has more career 300-yard passing games (four) in program history.

McGloin completed passes to nine different receivers (a season-high) and he now leads the Big Ten in passing yards (1,006), completions (83) and is tied for first with nine scoring passes.

In addition, his 1-yard TD run in the second quarter was his first rushing score since the 2011 Outback Bowl at the end of the 2010 season. With nine TD passes and two rushing scores, McGloin has had a hand in all 11 touchdowns the Nittany Lions have scored this year.
