I almost hate to tackle the subject of gun control, but with the recent horrific incident where innocent school children were murdered, it is a topic that is on everyone’s agenda.
To say that gun control is a touchy subject is putting it lightly. It would seem to be pure common sense that when something as terrible as this happens, the best thing to do would be to put laws in place to stop guns from getting into the hands of organisms who could perpetrate such crimes.
However, the answer is not so simple. There are already many laws in place. Short of a total and complete ban on guns, there is no sure way of stopping guns from getting into criminal and deviant hands. Even if there is a total and complete ban on guns, if someone wants to flip and kill people, there are plenty of other ways to do it.
If you are totally anti-gun, you have a problem. This country was born with a rifle in its hands. Our founding fathers were well aware of the importance of gun ownership, to the point that it was included in the Constitution.
I used to think that the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups were way off base to fight just about every gun control law that came around. After all, who needs a semi-automatic rifle anyway?
With age comes wisdom, and I now believe that they are 100 percent right to fight against any gun control. As I write this, I haven’t seen the NRA’s reponse to the recent tragedy, but I doubt that they will be ready to cave to the coming gun control wave.
So why am I now a pro-gun, no-more-gun-laws blockhead? Because adding more gun laws is not going to change the societal and cultural problems that cause people to flip out.
People of all ages in our country are exposed almost non-stop to extreme violence on television and in video games, to the point where for an unfortunate few there is no border between reality and fantasy.
OK, well we have to stop those unfortunate few from getting their hands on an actual gun. Short of a totalitarian ban on guns, that is not likely, and people can be killed with other things anyway.
The traditional family with a mother and father raising their children has become well, non-traditional. In this most recent case, you have to wonder what if they had worked it out? I obviously don’t know the details, but what if?
Will Hollywood tone down the violence? Other than delaying some of the more recent violent movies, no.
Will the bloody video games suddenly fall off the market? Not likely.
Will more gun laws stop the violence? No.
But wait, what if there is a complete and total ban on gun ownership? There are many who would like nothing better than to ban guns, period. They will be uncloaking shortly.
The coming legislative battles will be on the face about gun control, but there is a larger battle looming and it is about control, and not just gun control.
