Three especially interesting musical events are slated for Saturday, and if you play your cards right, you can take in all three. Two of the three are free, so your only expense would be the cost of gas.

Start your day at 11 a.m. with a music and improvisation workshop for youngsters by Steve Mitchell and Andy Seal at the Union Snyder Area Agency on Aging, 116 N. Second St., Lewisburg. This free program is part of Lewisburg’s Community Arts and Music series. Participants are encouraged to bring along a musical instrument, including voices, although some percussion instruments will be available.

Then if you hustle over to the Thomas Beaver Free Library, 205 Ferry St., Danville, you can take in the 1 p.m. premiere of “Iron in Our Veins,” a documentary about the history of iron-making in the Danville area produced by Van Wagner and Mark Temple, both teachers at Lewisburg High School. The 30-minute film will be followed by a short concert by Wagner of songs about the mining heritage of the area.

Back in Lewisburg, Walkin’ Jim Stoltz will present a program of music, photos and stories, “Forever Wild.” Stoltz, a singer-songwriter and Montana native, has walked more than 27,000 miles in pursuit of inspiration and vision for his songs and photos. The program, at the Lewisburg High School auditorium, is to benefit T&D’s Cats of the World, the wildlife rescue facility in western Union County. Tickets at the door are $14 for adults and $7 for kids.

The King Street Coffeehouse at the Savoy, 221 Front St., Northumberland, is open Friday night. Featured performers are Antonio Andrade, a newcomer to the coffeehouse scene, along with veteran performers the Gypsy Lizards and Lawson and Disorder. Doors open for the buffet dinner at 6 p.m., the music starts at 7 and runs until 10 p.m. Non-alcoholic beverages and desserts are available throughout the evening. $6 cover for the music and worth every cent!

At the Cherry Alley Cafe, 21 N. Third St., Lewisburg, Chicken Tractor holds forth from 7-9 Friday, and Bruce Barr is there on Saturday night, same times.

The March Madness Wine Trail is winding down, and Shade Mountain Winery’s Saturday event this week features the Folk Justice Band from 1:30-4 p.m. There’s a $5 cover for folks who don’t have tickets for the wine trail. Shade Mountain Winery is on Route 104 between Middleburg and Penns Creek.

The Blind Chitlin Kahunas will wind up March Madness events on Saturday at Spyglass Ridge Winery, off Route 890 on Plum Creek Road, near Sunbury. The Kahunas will be rockin’ the grapes on Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

Sunday afternoon and evening, the Billtown Blues Challenge auditions will be held in the ballroom at the Genetti Hotel in downtown Williamsport, starting at 4 p.m. A total of 10 acts will vie for the opportunity to open the 20th annual Billtown Blues Festival in Hughesville on June 14, not to mention the chance to attend the International Blues Challenge in Memphis next year. Three bands with local connections are on the program. The Blind Chitlin Kahunas, with Lewisburg bass player Kimbo Reichley, the Flicker Blues Band is fronted by Chris Trasatti of Pitman, and Ed and Kim Rhoades of Catawissa are well known on the local music scene. Members of the Billtown Blues Association have a vote, but even if you aren’t a member, where else can you hear so much good music for just $10?
