LEWISBURG -- Saturday's Lewisburg Live! may be too much of a good thing. For folks who love live music, choosing among the 14 acts is sure to be difficult.
Lewisburg Live! is part of the 39th annual Lewisburg Arts Festival and brings the acts to venues all over town between 6 p.m. and midnight.
Kicking off the first performances from 6-8 p.m. is Averie Clark: cool blue at the Lewisburg Club, 131 Market St. Clark has fabulous voice that can purr like a kitten or wail like a banshee, and she's backed up by some fine musicians, including guitarist and arranger Don Krech. The band has a great repertoire of jazz, pop, blues and swing tunes.
The Little Paris Jazz Trio will be at Puirseil's Irish Pub, 15 S. Sixth St. As the name implies, this trio plays "Django jazz," which was popular in the 30s and 40s and features Flora Eyster on flutes, Steve Catania on mandolin and persussion and Ed Scholl on guitar.
Lawson and Disorder is at Cherry Alley Cafe, 21 N. Third St. with a cool mix of covers from a variety of song-writers and bands, as well as a few of their own originals.
The 7-9 p.m. slots include Artie the Cat Renkle, who is an accomplished and knowledgeable acoustic blues guitarist and vocalist, at Mya's Cafe, 428 Market St. It won't take long to imagine Mya's is a Delta juke joint with Artie in the house.
The sophisticated guitar of Alfonse Ciaccio will be at Elizabeth's, An American Bistro, at 412 Market St. Ciacco has been playing since he was 8 years old, and his speciality is jazz guitar, featuring works of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and others.
Paul Smith, formerly of the Badlees, will be at Herwig's, 406 Market St., with a variety of classic rock and pop covers as well as his own compositions.
The 8-10 p.m. performances include more great talents. At Marco's Tapas, 434 Market St., Hannah Bingman and Doug McMinn will offer up a varied selection of blues and roots music. With guitars and vocals, as well as forays on the clarinet by McMinn, these two have developed a whole new interpretation of funky blues, smoky jazz and wonderful originals.
Bruce Derr will be at Brasserie Louis, 101 Market St. A Lewisburg native, Derr has recently returned to the region. He's a versatile musician, adept on guitar, banjo and mandolin, and his folk-rock songs are a treat to hear.
Bucknell basketball player Darren Mastropaolo will be at Zelda's Cafe, 101 S. Sixth St., to show off his musical chops with covers of such performers as Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Bob Marley and Jason Mraz.
Over at Bucknell Hall on the college campus, a new jazz group performs from 8:30-10:30. Steve Adams will be at the keyboard of his Hammond organ, along with Phil Haynes on the drums, Steve Bowman on tenor and soprano sax and Rick Hirsh on alto and tenor sax. They'll perform jazz and swing classics by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter and Woody Shaw.
At 9 p.m., Lewisburg's own Folk Justice Band will be at the Lewisburg Hotel, 136 Market St., with a variety of music from the Kingston Trio to the Moody Blues and back again.
Wrapping up the evening are three bands with a variety of styles. The Brasserie Louis, 101 Market St., will feature Earl Pickens and the Band Named Thunder with a variety of country-style originals and country classic cover tunes.
Up at the Towne Tavern, 600 Market St., Kinsey will play a vast assortment of covers by everyone from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Led Zeppelin, 3 Doors Down and the Beatles in addition to original compositions.
Just across the street at the Bull Run Inn, 605 Market St., electric blues by the Blind Chitlin Kahunas is the order of the evening.
These guys have played Memphis, so they have got to be good.
All three bands are scheduled from 10-midnight.
