WILLIAMSPORT — There are many colorful and outrageous things you can say about comedian Lisa Lampanelli. Saying she discriminates is certainly not one of them. When it comes to slinging insults and jabs, the foul-mouthed comic doesn’t hold back and attacks everyone. Including other female comics.
“I can’t stand female comics. They make me want to puke. Who in their right mind wants to pay $50 to hear some woman for an hour talking about her addiction to shopping, her boyfriend and her feminine problems?” said the brassy Lampanelli. “Oh sure! Count me in. I can’t wait to go out right away and buy tickets to see this chick. Like give me a break. This is why I am worshipped by so many people, especially men. Not only do they all want my body, (well, not the gay ones), they are shocked a chick can get up on stage and be as blunt and filthy as any male comic. In fact, I am filthier than most males.”
Lampanelli’s style of humor can best be described as one part Don Rickles, one part Howard Stern and the rest that of a drunken sailor.
Born in Trumbull, Conn., the 47-year-old comic started out on a very proper path by earning a degree in journalism in 1983, followed by a graduate program at Harvard in 1986. Although prestigious jobs at Spy Magazine, Popular Mechanics and Rolling Stone soon followed, she abandoned all that in the early 1990s to began a stand-up career in New York.
“Journalists work their ass off and they don’t get paid half what they should. I don’t like eating dirt and working hard, so that was enough of that line of work. Of course not everyone gets the chance to speak with me privately over the phone. I mean, that is worth the life of poverty for any journalist who gets to interview me.”
In addition to touring the country and insulting everyone in her path, Lampanelli is also a frequent guest on the Howard Stern Show as well as appearing on “Comedy Central” and in comedy DVDs and the feature film “Delta Farce” starring Bill Engvall and Larry The Cable Guy.
Her “Dirty Girl” CD and “Dirty Girl ... No Protection” DVD were released by Warner Bros./Jack Records in 2007 and became best sellers. Her claim to fame and trademark still remains her stand up routine which attracts an adults only crowd.
“At first, people who came to the bars and clubs and had to pay a five buck cover, would get really ticked off at my jokes. Yeah, pay a whole five bucks to see me,” she said. “Now that I am famous and everyone wants me, my crowds know what to expect when they shell out the money to come see me. They expect me to be crude and vulgar and make fun of everything and everybody. That is the thing that blows me away. These folks who get all ticked off by an off-colored joke. There is truth in everything, and sometimes you just need to shut up and laugh.”
