Milton alum set to release fourth book

— MILTON — Former Milton resident Joyce (Troutman) Strand, now living in southern California, will release her novel, “Fair Disclosure,” on Nov. 7.  Set in the backdrop of investor greed, “Fair Disclosure” is the third mystery by Strand to feature publicist Jillian Hillcrest as the hero sleuth. As with the previous two Jillian Hillcrest mysteries, Strand drew on real criminal cases for inspiration.

A publicist turned author, Strand writes about what she knows — except for the murder part. Although she headed up corporate communications for more than 25 years at several companies in California’s Silicon Valley, she admitted, “I never encountered a single murder, or even a crime.”

Strand grew up in Milton and was also a frequent visitor of Sunbury as a child where her mother was reared and where her grandmother and various great-aunts and uncles lives.

She graduated from Milton High School and then received a bachelor of arts degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, and a PhD from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

She and her late husband moved to California where she pursued a career as a publicist in the Silicon Valley, San Francisco area.  After she lost her job as a result of the 2008 recession, her husband suggested she write a book.

“I thought about his suggestion for a few moments before asking what kind of a book. He suggested a mystery, given how many I have read,” she said.

Strand is now writing her fourth book, which will feature one of the peripheral characters in the Jillian Hillcrest mysteries and will shift the focus from corporate Silicon Valley companies to wineries in the Sonoma Valley area of California. She is also working on an historical mystery highlighting the life of a judge in 1940s California.

“Fair Disclosure,” McCloughan and Schmeltz Publishing, LLC., paperback (313 pages), $7.99. For more information, visit
