I was surprised when we went to see the nearly 3-hour-long “Cloud Atlas.” I had seen mixed reviews and feared I would not like it, yet it seemed too ambitious a project to ignore. After all, it was co-directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski of “The Matrix” fame and Tom Tykwer, who directed “Run Lola Run.”
Well, we really enjoyed it. It’s a complex but not inaccessible film following several major characters seemingly linked through the ages. You can look at it as a metaphysical adventure or even an action movie. One thing for sure, it’s never boring.
Several of the actors perform in several roles in the film, and you can’t always recognize them. Surely, the movie will get an Oscar nomination for makeup and costumes.
Go see it, and try to figure out which characters are portrayed by Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving (a “Matrix” alumni), Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Susan Sarandon.
