Watch for things dropping out of the sky New Year’s Eve

BEAVERTOWN — Western Snyder Countians will look to the sky New Year’s Eve to gaze at a falling beaver and a descending kettle.

It only made sense to the mayor of Beavertown to drop a beaver from the sky on New Year’s Eve.

Mayor Cloyd William Wagner came up with the idea in 2008 and presented it to the council.

The mayor figured, if major cities could drop various items, why not a beaver in Beavertown?

“This first event was a smashing success, and so a second, third and fourth event was held, with equal success,” Wagner said, and number five is on the way to welcome 2013.

A “Big Beaver Drop” committee was formed. They arranged for the creation of a handmade beaver 6 feet in length, weighing 25 pounds. The beloved beaver has eyes that light up bright red when he is descending 75 feet from the Hook and Ladder fire truck owned by Tom Wagner.

“(Former borough secretary) Linda Thomas suggested we hold a contest to name the Beaver, and we did so, naming him Bucky the Beaver,” the mayor shared.

An entire celebration evolved around the awaited arrival of Bucky.

“At a later council meeting it was suggested we should have some professional fireworks for the event. We would solicit funds from the public to fund this portion of the program. The fire company agreed to allow the event to be held at the fire hall. They also served refreshments at the event free of charge. They and the ladies auxiliary helped to defray the costs of the fireworks,” Wagner said.

The Rescue Hose Company in Beavertown will host the fifth annual event New Year’s Eve beginning at 10 p.m. and ending sometime around 1 a.m.

Musical entertainment is part of the evening too, with DJ Brian Barto. There will be dancing in the truck room. Seating will be available in the truck room and dining room. Free hot dogs, chips and non-alcoholic drinks will be on hand. Bean soup will be available for purchase.
