Area's artists invited to enter exhibit

SUNBURY — Visual artists in the area are invited to enter the Susquehanna Art Society’s annual Art Exhibit at the Degenstein Library, 40 S. Fifth St., Sunbury.

Entries will be received at the library from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 7 and from 2-8 p.m. Aug. 8.

The exhibit will open with a reception and awarding of prizes between 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 12. The exhibit will continue through Aug. 21, during regular library hours except for Aug. 17 when the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Show judge will be Richard Rinehart, director of the Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University.

Each artist may submit three entries. The entry fee for SAS members is $5 for each entry; $10 each entry for non-members. New members are welcome and artists may join when they submit their work (and receive the member rate).

Students age 17 and under and adult beginners are invited to enter. All works should be 48 inches or less, no nudity, and the Art Society reserves the right to reject any work they believe is unsuitable for this public show.

Monetary prizes will be given in the following levels: Student, Adult Beginner, Adult Intermediate and Adult Advanced. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Opague (oils, acrylics, pastels), Watercolor, Photography, and Other (sculpture, graphics, collage, printmarking, etc.).

A new category has been added this year which will apply to all artists who choose to interpret it. A “Deeds of Peace” category, sponsored by The Slifer House, Lewisburg, in memory of Eli Slifer, dedicated to the soldiers and families in the wars in Iran and Afganistan.

In a speech honoring the service of soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War, Slifer admonished his listeners by saying: “It was theirs to be grand in the triumphs of battle. It is ours to be good in deeds of peace.”

The Slifer House directors will choose a judge and award prizes in this category.
