Good films abound

Go see the spectacle that is “Anna Karenina,” the Joe Wright-directed version of Leo Tolstoy’s story about the doomed Russian countess. For that matter, I also highly recommend “Killing Them Softly,” the Brad Pitt crime drama adapted from a George V. Higgins’ novel, “Cogan’s Trade.”

I saw them both over the weekend, along with a second viewing of “Skyfall,” the new James Bond entry, and a foreign film, “The Other Son,” about Israeli and Palestinian boys who get switched at birth and what happens when they and their families find out.

“Anna Karenina,” starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law, and “The Other Son” are at the Midtown Cinema in Harrisburg. The other two films are playing locally.

This has been a strong fall for films, and there’s plenty up on the big screen for all tastes and interests.

The “Twilight” finale and “Skyfall” continued to dominate the box office over the weekend, according to The Associated Press. Studio estimates put “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2” out front for the third consecutive weekend with $17.4 million domestically. “Skyfall” was a fraction behind with $17 million. Despite solid reviews, “Killing Them Softly” earned just $7 million, coming in at No. 7.

In related news, “Zero Dark Thirty,” director Kathryn Bigelow’s chronicle of the decade-long search for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was named best film of the year Monday by the New York Film Critics Circle.

She also won best director for the picture, her first film since the 2009 Iraq war drama, “The Hurt Locker,” while Greig Fraser won for cinematography. Both “The Hurt Locker” and Bigelow took top honors from the organization three years ago. “Zero Dark Thirty” is set to open in theaters on Dec. 19.

Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” and Sally Field was named supporting actress as the 16th president’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.
