Entertainment briefs: Winery concert series opens with harp music

Concert series opens with harp music

MIDDLEBURG — The opening concert of the Shade Winery Concert Series is Harp for the Holidays and takes place Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Anne Sullivan will present a program of harp music with selections from her new Christmas CD, "Break Forth," as well as favorites from her classical repertoire. "The music I will be performing is not exclusively holiday music, although I will be featuring some selections from my CD," Sullivan said. "The program does feature some of my favorite music to play and to listen to, including music by French composers Debussy and Rameau, as well as a new favorite of mine by Austrian harpist/composer Monika Stadler."

Tickets are $10 and available at the door or online.

Shade Mountain Vineyards & Winery is located at 16140 Route 104, Middleburg. For more information call 837-3644.

Concert to present variety of styles

SELINSGROVE — The Susquehanna University Symphonic Band will perform its first concert of the year on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Stretansky Concert Hall, in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art. The concert is free and open to the public.

Presented by Susquehanna’s Department of Music, the concert will feature a varied program. Eric L. Hinton, associate professor of music and concert conductor, said, "The first concert is always exciting, because it includes so many students who are new to the band. We’re exploring some 20th- and 21st-century compositional techniques."

The concert’s selections include: "Overture in B-flat" by Caesar Giovannini, "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen, "Chorale and Alleluia" by Howard Hanson, "English Dances" by Malcolm Arnold, "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh, "Medieval Suite" by Ron Nelson, "Shine" by Michael Markowski and "Manhattan Beach" by John P. Sousa. The program will also include Gregorian chant by members of the band.
