Uptown Music Collective to perform acoustic show at Community Theatre League

WILLIAMSPORT — Today and tomorrow, the Uptown Music Collective, in collaboration with the Community Theatre League, will present “UMC Unplugged” at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Theatre League. This performance marks the second collaboration with the Community Theatre League after last year’s successful performance of “42nd and Broadway: A Contemporary Broadway Revue.”

This year’s performance was inspired by the long-running television series “MTV’s Unplugged” and will pay tribute to performances such as Eric Clapton’s “Layla,” Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.”

“Our first collaboration was a great success,” says Jacquie Engel, CTL’s youth program coordinator.  “CTL’s intimate space really allows the audience to get up close and personal with the performers and that creates a new experience for everyone.  We are so excited to do an ‘unplugged’ concert and think the Community Theatre is the perfect venue for this type of show.”

Beginning in 1989, “MTV’s Unplugged” features top artists performing their popular songs with only acoustic instruments.  Folk and acoustic music’s increase in popularity fueled the series’ success and the show is still on air today and features bands and artists that are currently popular.  The series established a number of new acts such as The Indigo Girls, R.E.M., and Sinéad O’Connor, and renewed interest in beloved artists like Paul Simon, The Grateful Dead, and Bob Dylan.

“We have been impressed with the wonderful concerts the UMC has presented at the CAC and thought they’d be a perfect fit in our space,” Engel said. “It gives the performers the opportunity to tailor their numbers for different settings, maybe to think outside the box a bit.  The first collaboration was a Broadway-inspired concert, and this unplugged presentation is another great fit for us.”
