The Susquehanna gets funky

BLOOMSBURG — “Some call it a waterfall of funk, but we like to think of it as the antacid for the heartburn of your soul.”

The water will fall this Saturday night and flow down to the Turkey Hill Brewing Company in Bloomsburg for a funk-infused music bash, thanks to the Mighty Susquehannas.

Unlike the river of the same name, this band is never stagnate or murky. Instead, the five-piece band’s sound is crystal clear and free flowing with a strong undercurrent of funk, rock and a bit of soul.

“When we’re playing, if there are not a lot of people dancing or really getting into the music, we’re doing something wrong since our music always seems to get the party started,” said Eric Kyle, drummer for the band that is fairly new to the local music scene.

“We’ve all been friends forever and each of us were involved in music somehow. It seemed like everyone we went to school with had left the area, but we remained close and decided to start a band of our own. And since then, about a year and a half now, it’s been an amazing experience.”

That experience has landed the band at venues across the Valley and into Wilkes-Barre where they performed at the noted River Street Jazz Café.

With their trademark funk and fun-infused, fueled style of music, the band performs a mix of originals and a few covers thrown in along the way.

“I like being able to make music and see the people in the crowd having a good time and enjoying themselves,” he said. “For me, music has always been a part of my life and something I enjoy doing.”

Kyle noted that while in school, he was always the kid sitting at his desk, drumming out a tune with his hands and wishing he would be sitting behind a drum set instead of in front of a chalk board.
