LEWISBURG — After having to take a year off for renovations to Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on the campus of Bucknell University, the 10th edition of the Cavalcade Of Champions Drum & Bugle Corps Competition returns at 7 p.m. July 6.
Even with the year off, the spirit of drum corps fans in the area has not been dampened.
“They love the fact the show is coming back and I’ve had people say to me ‘when is it going to be and I’ll be there,’” said Graham Showalter, president of the Union County Veterans 4th of July Parade Committee.
Some of the top drum crops from the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) who will be in competition, include, but not in show order: Bushwackers, Princeton, N.J.; Empire Statesmen, Rochester, N.Y.; Hawthorne Caballeros, Hawthorne, N.J.; Sunrisers, Brentwood, Long Island, N.Y. and Windsor Regiment, West Windsor, N.J.
In exhibition will be the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Drum Corps, the Preston Scout House Band from Canada and “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps.
“We are really excited for the return of the Cavalcade and we believe the fans are going to enjoy the great renovations that were made at the (Bucknell University) stadium,” Showalter added. “After a year off, we are expecting a great crowd for the show.”
According to event organizers, fans from as far away as New England make the trip to Lewisburg for the show.
“What makes this year’s show weekend different is that it falls the week after our 4th of July parade, so it’s a win-win situation for all of Lewisburg for those two weeks,” Showalter said. “Plus, we’ll have two corps, Reilly Raiders Sr. Drum & Bugle Corps from Philadelphia and the Saints Brigade Drum & Bugle Corps, Port Chester, N.Y., in the parade on June 29.”
The show, which had been traditionally slotted in the third week of July was moved up in the DCA calendar year to the first Saturday in July following the show’s hiatus last year.
The Cavalcade of Champions drums began in 1949 and ran for 24 uninterrupted years by the Keystoners Drum and Bugle Corps, Wallace W. Fetzer American Legion Post 71 in Milton.
Over the years, the likes of the New York Skyliners, Archer-Epler Musketeers and Jersey Joes were among the list of who’s-who of drum corps that has performed at the competition.
Tickets go on sale beginning June 17. Reserved seats are $20 and general admission is $17. For more information, call 523-3237.
