— SHAMOKIN DAM -- For more than 20 years, songstress Karen Nogel has been singing the blues, some jazz, old standards and classic rock and roll throughout the Susquehanna Valley where she has rightfully earned rave reviews and respect from her fellow musicians and fans of music.

This Sunday from 5-8 p.m. Nogel will join local guitar hero Mark Tomeo for an evening of song and sounds at Skeeter’s BBQ, 106 Victor Lane, Shamokin Dam. Admission is free.

“The show will be a great way to wind-down your weekend and enjoy some fine music and a good dinner at a place that has become a fantastic spot to hear local music,” said Nogel, in a voice that was soft yet confident and rightfully meant for singing.

That voice, paired with Tomeo’s passionate style blend effortlessly together to form a harmonious union that is heightened even more when Tomeo lends his own vocal skills to the musical mix.

“It is an honor to work with Mark and for the past two years I have learned so much from him and have really enjoyed performing with him,” she said. “He is a very gifted musician and so easy to work with.”

Together the duo perform a wide mix of covers from such artists as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Frank Sinatra to contemporary numbers by Sheryl Crow and Adele.

Although the duo performs mainly covers, they always add their own spin to each song so it sounds fresh and new.

“I like having the opportunity to perform music from the ’50s to today’s music and find it rewarding to perform a Patsy Cline song or something from Hank Williams and have someone new to that music take an interest in it,” she said. “It’s like they are discovering that type of music for the very first time.”

Nogel, a Mifflinburg native first started singing during grade school and over the years has mastered the skills to perform a number of musical styles including jazz, a genre of music that requires both talent, timing and a little mojo.

For more than 20 years Nogel was part of the regional band Dean McNett and currently provides her vocal skills for the musical act Pages of Paul.

“I love having the chance to perform around the area and work with so many talented musicians. The Susquehanna Valley has a rich music scene and so great place for the public to hear them perform,” she said. “We hope everyone comes out to Skeeter’s this Sunday to hear some of that local music and enjoy a nice evening out before the weekend is over.”
