LEWISBURG — Caroline Shaw, violinist with Lewisburg’s Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, has been awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for music.
Shaw received this world-famous honor for her composition “Partita for 8 Voices,” which the Pulitzer committee praised as “…highly polished and inventive a cappella work uniquely embracing speech, whispers, sighs, murmurs, wordless melodies and novel vocal effects.”
Shaw is the youngest musician to have been awarded a Pulitzer since the award’s inception in 1943. She has been a violinist with the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra since 2006, and has been heard with the group locally many times at the Campus Theatre, Central Oak Heights, and the Weis Center.
Rick Benjamin, Paragon’s director said, “It is really heartening to see this honor go to such a fine and worthy person. Caroline is just such a delight in every way; we’re all extremely happy for her. Nice ‘guys’ do finish first!”
