Local country music duo inducted into Wheeling Jamboree

— HALIFAX — The Wheeling Jamboree, a time-honored country music venue in Wheeling, W.V., has members that read like a list of who’s who in country music — Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Doc and Chickie Williams, Grandpa Jones, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, the Osborne Brothers and more.

On Oct. 12, two area country music entertainers were added to this prestigious list following their induction into this country music institution — Shelby Nestler of Halifax and Jim Wilson of Huntingdon were presented with the Wheeling Jamboree Family Artist medallions and Jamboree trophies during a special ceremony on the stage of the Wheeling Island Casino.

“This duo represents traditional country music,” said Dave Heath, executive producer of the Wheeling Jamboree during the medal presentation.

Nestler and Wilson had been performing on the Wheeling Jamboree periodically with the Make Mine Country Band over the past few years. Last summer, they performed at the New Berlin Fireman’s Carnival, the West End Fair in Laurelton, the Milton Moose, and near Halifax at the Armstrong Valley Winery and will be performing Nov. 24 at a benefit with Brad Crum’s “Elvis Show.”

They received a call last November requesting them to return to the Jamboree as a duo act. It was during that Jamboree show they were invited to become members of the music show.

“We were speechless” said Nestler.

“To be invited to be a member of the Wheeling Jamboree just blew us away,” Wilson added. “ Our parents were avid fans and listeners of the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree during our childhoods, and to be part of the Wheeling Jamboree family was more than we had ever dreamed.”

The Wheeling Jamboree has seen many changes during its 80 years of broadcasting a live country music show, second only to the Grand Ole Opry.
