Millheim welcomes Wiyos

MILLHEIM — The New York-based band The Wiyos will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 and 4 at Elk Creek Cafe and Aleworks, 100 W. Main St., Millheim.

The Wiyos’ 2012 release, “Twist,” has been compared to  Lennon/McCartney, Big Pink, and Pink Floyd. The Wiyos are mostly known for their wild amalgamation of old timey sounds, but on “Twist” the band lets their late 20th century upbringings creep in with their vintage sensibility.  Scotland’s The Herald reviewed one of the 2012 release shows of “Twist” in Glasgow and called it everything from “junkyard blues to Cuban neighborhood via surf song harmonies and backwoods Appalachia.”

“Twist” is an original song cycle loosely based on Frank Baums’ “The Wizard of  Oz” and Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey.” The band’s central writers are Michael Farkas, who started the band in 2002, and Teddy Weber.

They were featured in the BBC television documentary, “Folk America – Hollerers, Stompers and Old-Time Ramblers.” In 2009 The Wiyos were hand-picked by Bob Dylan to tour for seven weeks as the opener of the “Bob Dylan Show” with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp.
