SELINSGROVE -- Join the Susquehanna Valley Chorale (SVC) Pops for its “Get Down With Motown!” concert at the Weber Auditorium on the campus of Susquehanna University. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. May 2-3.
“Motown” has two meanings in the world of music. It refers to a groundbreaking Detroit-based record company founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy, Jr., and it also describes a whole new groundbreaking “sound” — a crossover genre that fused the sounds of pop and soul music that helped to bring together a racially divided and segregated society, and touched people of all ages and races.
“Motown was all about a ‘group’ sound, and we have separate guest groups of ‘guy’ and ‘girl’ backup singers to support our soloists – a real collaborative effort,” said SVC music director and conductor Dr. William Payn. “We’ve never done Motown before, and this will surely be a colorful, upbeat, high-energy event.”
In the spirit of the big, bold instrumentation with heavy brass and percussion that dominated the Motown era, Dr. Payn has selected some of the most memorable Motown classics for this year’s Pops concert that he says, “everyone in the audience will surely know.” Some of the timeless favorites that will be performed include classic-songs from The Temptations, The Supremes, Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and many more.
Featured SVC Pops performers include: Marina Gresh, Sara Kelley, Liz DeSantis, John Warfel, Kathryn Hockenberry, Marilyn Gresh, Steve Jordan, Michael Zettlemoyer, Tom Maurer, Bill Calhoun, Coleen Renshaw and Brad Wakeman.
“Get Down with Motown!” will also feature appearances by guest DJs; Jon Lee and Don Steese, who both worked at various radio stations during the Motown era.
Tickets are $22 for adults $8 for students. Children 6 years and under admitted free. Visit svcmusic.org to purchase tickets online or call (570) 547-0455.
