NORTHUMBERLAND — Unlike Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future,” you won’t need a flux-capacitor-enabled DeLorean to revisit the 1980s this weekend. Instead, head to Front Street Station in Northumberland for an ’80s blast from the past.
The’80s time warp will be causes by the big haired, big on fun Pittsburgh-based ’80’s tribute band Tongue ‘N Cheek.
“Our show is going to be one giant party with a lot of dancing and great songs that you remember and know all the words to,” said Dino Valentino, drummer for Tongue ‘N Cheek. “Coming out to see our show is a chance to not only hear your favorite songs from the 1980s but also a chance to forget about all the stress in your life. Forget about taxes, the fiscal cliff and work. It will be a time to just have fun.”
In a word, it will be awesome.
“This band will play the music we want to hear but they will put their spin on the music. This band is just fun, having a good time, and is inviting everyone there to get into it as much as they do,” said Travis Fisher, of Fisher Promotions, promoter of the show. “This is music filled with memories that most of us talk about every time we see our group of friends. We talk about ‘back in the day.’ This show takes us back to the day.”
For the past nine years, Valentino, along with Dixy Normus (lead vocals), Doctor Scary (vocals and lead guitar) and Shredder Ace Rocketsauce on lead bass, have captured the energy and exuberance of ’80s music from acts such as Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Firehouse, Warrant, Skid Row and the like.
Coincidently, Tongue ‘n Cheek opened for Firehouse’s October concert which Fisher Promotions brought to the area.
“We play only the hits from the ’80’s — the songs people who grew up in that era will instantly recognize and remember,” said Valentino who noted some of his wilder ’80s memories are best left back in the decade that brought us neon clothing, big hair and shoulder pads. “While there is a lot of great music out there today, nothing can compare to the songs from the ’80s.”
To get things moving, DJ Kyle Blessing from Y106.5 FM will be spinning tunes from the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna and other ’80s mainstays leading up to show time.
“Our show is all about letting go. If you have worked your tail physically and emotionally all week long and are ready for the best party you’ve ever been to, then you need to come see us,” said Doctor Scary. “It will be a time you’ll never forget.”
While Tongue ‘N Cheek attracts ’80’s music fans of all ages, for the Generation X crowd, the show will a blast from the past and totally cool.
“It’s my belief that the music from the ’80s is popular because it takes everyone back to a time in their lives when music was all about good times and parties. Letting go. I’m fortunate to have a job where I play one riff and the crowd erupts,” said Doctor Scary. “Partly because they know and love the song but secondly it takes them back to the first time they heard it. They remember the party they were at or what it meant to them. Nostalgia. It’s a huge part of our lives.”
