Sign up for pinhole photography

WILLIAMSPORT — Pennsylvania Photographic Workshops is offering a series of four workshops to get the whole family involved in pinhole photography.

For 12 years, the last Sunday in April has been Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD) — a day for photographers everywhere to step away from technology and enjoy the controlled inaccuracies of a pinhole camera.

Pinhole cameras have no lens and pinhole photos are taken simply through a small hole, about the size of a pin. It is fun, educational and creative to use these kinds of cameras that can be self-made with various boxes or cans. Any container that can be made light-tight is enough: from tea boxes to tomato cans, from shoe boxes to wooden ones.

In 2001, 291 pinhole photographers from 24 countries took part in the WPPD and the web exhibition. Last year they were 3,865 from 74 countries. Galleries of images from each country are online at www.pinholeday.org.

Everyone who participates is allowed to share their images online. It is not a competition.

Conducted at Studio Six in the Pajama Factory, 1307 Park Ave. Williamsport, these workshops will take participants through the process of building a camera on April 7, taking photographs with it on April 14, fine-tuning it or modifying it on April 21 and finally participating in WPPD on April 28. All sessions are 1-4 p.m.

Students do not need any photography experience and children are welcome with an adult. In addition to building your own camera, you will learn to make black and white prints of your images in the darkroom.

Cost for the four-week series is $45 for students, $60 for adults, and $100 for a family plus a $10 material fee per person.

Pre-registration by April 3 is required and may be done online at www.keepmeinthedark.com/registration.htm or by email at paphotoworkshops@gmail.com. More information is available by calling Ralph Wilson at 971-2571.
