Bucknell Jazz and Rock Ensemble to perform Saturday

LEWISBURG -- The original members of the Bucknell Jazz and Rock Ensemble will perform in concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.

This is the band's first performance together since June, 1974. The performance, free to the public, will be recorded for the group's next CD.

Dory Vanderhoof will direct the band. The 1975 Bucknell graduate, now a performing arts management consultant in Toronto, Canada, has wonderful memories of the Susquehanna Valley.

"I remember going to Haines Music on Market Street in Sunbury to buy reeds for my horns. It was the only place for miles around to get reeds," he said. "One time, just before Christmas, it was snowing, and the Christmas lights were on all over the town, and it looked like It's a Wonderful Life.' That image comes to mind whenever anyone mentions Sunbury."

The idea for a reunion first came up about three years ago, when Mr. Vanderhoof transferred tapes of performances of BJRE performances to digital format, which he was able to e-mail to other former members of the ensemble.

"I travel to about 70 cities a year, and I have a chance to see many of the members of the group, and we started talking about how we could make this happen," he said. "The trick was to schedule the dates about a year and a half out."

That way, he explained, people could plan to come to Lewisburg and also had time to rehearse the music before they came.

"About half the members of the group have continued to play," he said. "The rest had to get their lip back."

Of the original 25 members of the BJRE, 23 will be in Lewisburg for the performance on June 30. Everyone has to travel some distance, Mr. Vanderhoof said. The closest are in Hershey and suburban Philadelphia, while others are coming from as far away as the west coast.
