Valley Players produce eerie ‘Night Chills’ for Halloween celebration

SUNBURY — The Valley Players are staging a readers’ theater production of “Night Chills,” Edgar Allan Poe stories, adapted by Billy St. John. “Night Chills” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1-2 at The Packer House, 24 N. 3rd St., Sunbury.

Tickets are $20 and include a dessert buffet and the show.

A departure from the group’s typical dinner theater productions, this show is something fresh and different for The Valley Players. “In readers’ theater, the actors have the scripts with them on stage, incorporating them into the action,” said Joanne Lauer, co-director. “All the tension and drama comes from the actors’ voices. We’ll be painting a macabre picture for you using only Poe’s stories in a moody atmosphere at the Packer House. It will be a suspenseful and fun way to celebrate Halloween.”

“Night Chills” depicts three of Poe’s most famous stories: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Cask of the Amontillado.” A dramatic reading of Poe’s most famous poem, “The Raven,” will also be performed.

The cast includes Hope Kopf and Marlena Kimmey of Northumberland; Kevin Hickman of Danville; Maggie Getkin, Lisa Caruso, and Michael and Crystale Keller of Sunbury; David Lauer of Selinsgrove; and Drew Faust of New Berlin.

The dessert buffet includes pumpkin bread pudding with caramel sauce, gingerbread cake with pears, Mississippi mud cake, grilled pineapple with butter rum sauce, apple crisp and rice pudding. Like other Valley Players productions, “Night Chills” is BYOB.

Reservations are required. To obtain a ticket order form, contact Valley Players box office representative Joyce Hendricks at artdiva1@ptd.net or (570) 898-5450.
