Weis Center hosts evening of classical South Indian dance

LEWISBURG — Acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Aparna Ramaswamy will present “Sannidhi (Sacred Space)” on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University.

In five sections, “Sannidhi” weaves together music and movement, rhythm and lyric, spirit and emotion, creating an invisible link between dancer, musicians and audience.

The performance will feature music played by four musicians: Ranee Ramaswamy on cymbals; Lalit Subramaniam, vocals; Rajna Swaminathan on two-headed south Indian drum; and Anjna Swaminathan, on violin.

In advance of the performance, Ramaswamy will give a free one-hour lecture and demonstration of the Bharatanatyam dance form and Indian music on Sept. 18, at noon in the Weis Center Lobby.

Bharatanatyam blends two distinct components: rhythmic dance, comprising various complex body movements and rhythmic compositions, and narrative dance, which utilizes the language of gesture and facial expression.

Ramaswamy has toured extensively, both as a soloist and as choreographer and principal dancer of Ragamala Dance, of which she is co-artistic director with her mother, Ranee Ramaswamy.

Her choreography and performance have been described as “a marvel of buoyant agility and sculptural clarity” (Dance Magazine), “thrillingly three-dimensional” and “an enchantingly beautiful dancer” (The New York Times).

In 2010, Ramaswamy was the first Bharatanatyam dancer/choreographer to be named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” in which was written, “At once iconic and explosive, Aparna Ramaswamy infuses the formal rigor of Bharatanatyam with fluid spontaneity and rock star allure.”

Tickets for the performance are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors ages 62+, $10 for youth under 18, and $10 for all college students.

Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling the Campus Box Office at (570) 577-1000.

Tickets are also available in person from several locations including the Weis Center lobby weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University bookstore in Lewisburg weekdays and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30 to 4 p.m.; and the CAP Center Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center, weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
