Shamokin gets a good rap

SELINSGROVE — What do you get when you combine an entertaining Valley radio personality with a creative and stylish hairdresser?

A hit song and video that has drawn nearly 20,000 viewers to YouTube.

“Shamokin State of Mind” is the name of the song that Max-Media and Chad Evans, Y-106 disc jockey, formerly of Shamokin, and Erica Perrige, of Danville, decided to put together in 2011.

The song parody is based off of rapper Jay-Z and Emmy Award-winning Alicia Keys’ 2009 hit song “Empire State of Mind.”

“We just wanted to try something different,” Evans said. “This was a long process.”

Evans began writing lyrics to match the beat of the music, but he knew he needed a female to fill the shoes of Keys, so he decided to put out a “help wanted” on Facebook.

Perrige answered the call.

“I saw it and I knew Chad and I was like ‘Are you kidding me?’ He knows I sing,” she said. “So I called him and I told him I was in.”

The two began production on the song and it began to hit Valley airwaves and was an instant success.

“People just like it,” Evans said. “It got great response so it got me thinking ... we wanted to make a video.”

Perrige agreed to the video and the two made their way to Shamokin.

“I am originally from there so I know the area,” Evans said. “We went out there and began to start to film.”

The video is now rapidly approaching 20,000 hits.

Evans said he began writing the lyrics several months before the actual song hit the airwaves of Y-106.

“It wasn’t easy,” he said. “But it was fun.”

Perrige, a hairstylist in Lewisburg, said once the video made it to YouTube people began to rec-

ognize her.

“I would be working and people would say ‘We love your video,’” she said. “It was shocking, but it was great to hear.”

The lyrics bring to light anything and everything about Shamokin and at one point, even a reference to Northumberland County Commissioner Vinny Clausi is made.

Evans thanks Clausi for the opening of his former pizzeria and restaurant, “Two Guys.”

“I saw it,” Clausi said. “It was good and funny. Maybe he should be a comedian.”

Evans also references pierogies and barbecue, two summer traditions in the city.

As Perrige uses her powerful voice to sing the refrain, Evans is seen dancing in the background.

“This was all just fun and it kind of took off,” he said. “So it made us think.”

And for Evans, that’s a scary thought.

“He called me again and said he had an idea,” Perrige said. “I told him, without even hearing it, that I was in.”

So the dynamic duo drove to Elysburg and scouted out the location of their next parody.

“What better place then a place that has fun, food and fantasy?” Evans said. “Got to go to Knoebels!”

And thus, the parody to the hit song “Good Feeling” by rapper Flo Rida was created.

“We went back at it,” Evans joked. “We went to Knoebels Amusement Resort and began filming.”

Perrige once again used her powerful voice in the song and can be seen with Evans throughout the video strolling around the amusement park.

In the video, the pair sing about everything and anything Knoebels and it became such a hit, the amusement park began to play it over the loudspeaker this past summer.

Knoebels also used the video on its web site to attract new thrill seekers to the park.

So what’s next for Evans?

“We are kicking around a few ideas,” he said. “We have some things in mind.”

Evans wouldn’t reveal his plans, but said he is looking at Geisinger or the Selinsgrove Speedway.

“We will see what happens,” he said. “We are talking about different things now.”

Either way, Perrige and her powerful voice singing about doctors or speed racers as Evans tries to dance in the background will be sure to make a splash.

“Whatever he wants to do, I am in,” Perrige said. “We’re getting pretty good at this.”
