CATAWISSA — The Catawissa Teenage Battle of the Bands 2014 will be held June 13 beginning at 6 p.m. at Cara Park on South Fourth Street. The rain location is the Catawissa Fire Company, also on South Fourth Street.
“Even though there are monetary prizes, the event is not a competition but rather an evening to give teens a chance to play music for their peers and people of all ages,” said Joe Gaughan, Catawissa Borough’s entertainment director who has run the event and The Catawissa Summer Breeze Music in the Park series for the past 10 years.
“My favorite part of the evening is the end of the night when I watch the teenaged musicians who, for the most part, were strangers at the start of the evening who are then exchanging contact information with each other and who knows what that sparks? We added a solo entertainer category a couple years back so we have expanded the event over time and our audience size grows each year.”
The entertainers are from surrounding communities including Lewisburg, Watsontown, Beaver Springs, Nescopeck, Williamsport, Numedia and Lycoming County.
The guideline is that the majority of players in the bands have to be teenagers and so do the solo entertainers. “We really do it up big for the kids, providing a beautiful setting near the river with quality sound and lighting for them,” Gaughan said.
Food and beverage concessions will be available. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.
Participating are the following bands: Blue Dream, Urban Souls, Steel Wings, Covert Express, The Black Strat Blues Company and the Send Request Band.
Solo entertainers are Morgan Foust, Steph Lynn, Michaela Wagner, Aiyona Haymen and Maiah Farley.
“It is amazing the caliber of these teenaged entertainers” said Gaughan. “If you love music, please come and you will be in musical heaven.”
