DANVILLE -- An unidentified young man was found dead Friday morning on the shared porch of a duplex where police in March arrested a tenant for dealing heroin.

Another tenant of the East Mahoning Street duplex, who declined to identify herself, found the young man unconscious shortly after 9 a.m. when she opened her apartment door to let her dog out.

She said she recognized the male, but didn't know him well, and that he wasn't there to see her or her two children.

She did say the deceased male on occasion visited the next-door apartment of Jennifer Hunt, 36, of 308 E. Mahoning St. Hunt was arrested in March, along with Shawn Ashton, 21, of 73 Beaver Place, on charges of dealing heroin. Her apartment has remained vacant since she was placed in Montour County Jail in lieu of $100,000 straight bail.

Danville police Sgt. William Wilt said the male was a local resident, but declined to identify him, referring questions about the man's name and cause of death the coroner's office.

Montour County Deputy Coroner Rick Stump, who pronounced the man dead at the scene, did not answer repeated attempts Friday afternoon for additional information.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn also did not answer repeated attempts late Friday for additional information.

The death has initially been determined "unexplained" and is not considered suspicious, Wilt said. Police handed the next step of the investigation over to the coroner's office, Wilt said.

Several neighbors, concerned again about events at the duplex, gathered at the scene Friday morning.

"I hope it has nothing to do with drugs," said Robert Kriner, of 302 Church St., which is located across from the duplex home. "I thought we were done with all of this. I haven't seen anybody around there since the bust. I have six kids, and I don't want them near this kind of stuff."

Kriner, among other neighbors, was quick to say the next-door tenant and her children have never been connected or associated with Hunt's activities.

Sandy McCarthy, of 220 Church St., also hoped the incident did not involve drug activities associated with Hunt's apartment.

"When I heard the ambulance turn the corner, I got a little scared," McCarthy said. "I looked out back and saw the guy lying there. It was really creepy.

"There used to be a lot of people coming and going from (Hunt's) apartment, but I haven't seen anybody since the police were there. The police have done an excellent job in stopping it from what I see."

Police tape blocked a small section of East Mahoning Street for about an hour as the Danville Ambulance Service and police officers removed the body after Stump arrived to investigate.
