Ironmen beat odds, rally to top Milton

By Matt Corbett
The Danville News

DANVILLE -- Danville coach Devin Knorr noted that the Ironmen haven't had a good track record of coming from behind in games this season. Their come-from-behind win over Milton on Wednesday should give the Ironmen confidence in future situations.

After Milton took the lead with a four-run top of the fourth inning, Danville responded with four runs of its own in the bottom as the Ironmen rallied to defeat the Black Panthers 9-6 in a Susquehanna Valley League clash Wednesday.

"This was an all-around good win for Danville," Knorr said. "I'm real happy with the way we came back. We could have folded the tent, and we don't have a good record of coming from behind this season. We did a real good job of answering (their inning) and staying in it mentally."

It was a big win for Danville, which moved closer to a District 4 playoff berth after improving to 8-6 overall and in the SVL. Milton, coming off its second win of the season the previous day, fell to 2-12.

The Black Panthers got a solid outing from senior right-hander Tony Fannick, making his first mound appearance of the season after returning from injury suffered during basketball season. Fannick pitched into the fourth inning, moving to first base after giving up a leadoff walk to Brett Reichard. He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out three and walked two.

"We were hoping to get two innings out of him," Milton coach Walt Patynski said of Fannick. "The fact that he went into the fourth was more than we expected. I think he showed what he can do when he's able to go longer."

Danville took a 3-2 lead into the top of the fourth, but Milton took advantage of one-out walks to Bryan Kulbacki and Andy Kerstetter and a two-out pass to Brad Balliet. All three scored when Fannick doubled to deep right on the first pitch from Michael Smith, giving Milton a 5-3 lead. After a walk to Gerry Runyan, Raymonde Adames made it 6-3 with a run-scoring single through the hole between third and shortstop.

But the Ironmen stormed right back, sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Brett Reichard walked ahead of three consecutive singles by Jake Gronsky, Smith and Andrew Shoop. Ryan Reichard capped the inning with a two-run double down the left-field line as the Ironmen took a 7-6 lead. They later loaded the bases, but Adames -- the third Milton pitcher of the inning -- stranded them by inducing Brett Reichard's fielder's choice grounder.

Senior right-hander Todd Moser came on in the top of the fifth and hurled three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save. He struck out one and walked one in his stint.

"Todd came in and was very effective. He mixed and matched his pitches well," Knorr said. "We decided earlier in the week we wanted to do some pitching by committee, so we'll have some fresh arms if we make districts. Three innings of shutout relief was very nice."

Danville added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when Zach LeVan led off with a double, Gronsky singled and Smith drove in LeVan with a sacrifice fly. The Ironmen made it 9-6 when Ryan Reichard walked with two outs, and he and Gronsky executed a delayed double steal, with Gronsky sliding in at home just ahead of the throw.

Milton opened the scoring in its first at-bat on Runyan's two-out single. He eventually scored from third on a double steal. Danville answered in the bottom of the first when Gronsky led off with a slicing double down the right-field line and later scored on Ryan Reichard's groundout.

Milton took a 2-1 lead on Runyan's RBI groundout in the third, but Danville rallied for two runs in the frame on RBI singles by Anthony Renz and Nick Bloskey.

Both teams had their bats working, with Milton banging out 10 hits and Danville 12. Adames and Gronsky had three hits apiece for their respective teams.

Smith picked up the win with four innings of work, courtesy of Danville's rally in the bottom of the fourth.
