DANVILLE -- In times of adversity, sometimes all it takes is a little spark.

Heading into Tuesday's SVL battle with Selinsgrove, Danville's softball team had little in the way of momentum. They had lost seven games in a row, putting a once-promising season on the brink of playoff elimination. The Ironmen were without three starters and head coach Dwayne Heeter was also absent, serving a one-game suspension after getting ejected from Saturday's game.

With all the negatives hovering on the surface, the Ironmen still peppered Selinsgrove for four runs in the first inning and Angie Lynn took care of the rest.

Lynn carried a no-hitter into the sixth, settling on a two-hit shutout while Danville's inconsistent bats broke out with 14 hits in an 8-0 victory over the Seals.

The win ends Danville's seven-game skid, moving it to 6-10 overall, 6-8 in the SVL. The Ironmen need to win their final four games to qualify for the postseason.

Danville got off to a good start in its last playoff push. Lynn didn't allow a ball to get past the circle in the top of the first inning and a Danville offense that had scored just six runs in its last 27 at-bats jumped on Selinsgrove's Kendra Fegley from the start.

Freshmen Josie Pervola and Rachel Leister -- subbing for an injured Sarah Mullen -- singled to lead off the inning. Carrie Mensch lined a single for Danville's first run and sophomore Brianne Burkland then smacked a two-run double to make it 3-0. Lynn later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 after the first.

"The last couple of weeks have been tough," said Lynn. "The toughest was the loss to Midd-West, where we lost in 13. So for us to get out like that and score some runs, it relaxed everyone."

Assistant coach Keith Burkland, subbing for Heeter, was certainly grateful for the fast start.

"We've had to battle all season just to win every inning because we haven't scored a lot of runs," he said. "But we had a big first inning and it was huge spark for us."

Danville added one run in the second and two more in the third to build a 7-0 lead.

In the second, Nicole Wallize walked, stole second and scored on a single by Mensch. In the third, freshman Alisha Kirkner -- playing in place of senior captain Courtney Zampetti -- singled to start the inning and Pervola singled with two outs before Leister drilled a two-run single to make it 7-0.

"Whenever you can score runs, it makes life a lot easier as a pitcher," said Lynn.

Danville's final run came in the fifth when Kylee Dragano singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wallize.

The only inning Lynn ran into any trouble was the third when the Seals loaded the bases with one out, but Lynn got a flyout to end the threat. She finished with eight strikeouts and just two walks, allowing just one runner to advance past second.
