Bats go quiet, but pitching comes through

DANVILLE -- Harold Albertson's been around baseball long enough to know when to scrap tomorrow's plans.

He knows when you have a chance to nail down a victory, especially in the ultra-competitive Susquehanna Valley American Legion League, you do whatever it takes.

What it took Thursday night was bringing in fireballer Dan Winnie to get the final five outs as Danville held off Selinsgrove for a 3-2 win behind another brilliant performance from newcomer Matt Shultz.

Post 40 is now 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the SVALL's Susquehanna Valley Division.

After not playing during the high school season, Shultz, a rising DHS sophomore, entered Thursday's game after tossing a four-hitter over the weekend.

He allowed just three hits against hard-hitting Selinsgrove in 4 1/3 innings of work Thursday, getting a pair of big strikeouts to end the fifth and again proving that he will have a vital role on Albertson's staff the remainder of the summer.

"Matt Shultz has just been amazing," said Albertson. "Selinsgrove is a great team, one of the best hitting teams in this league. They hit some shots off him, but he hung in there and got outs when he needed to."

Shultz gave up two hits and a run in the second Thursday -- the game started in the bottom of the first after it was suspended Monday -- but did not allow another hit until Derek Moyer led off the sixth with a single. After Moyer scored on a throwing error from the outfield, Albertson went to Winnie. The veteran coach planned to save the fireballer to face Berwick, fresh off its PIAA title a week ago, in today's game.

"We'll worry about (Friday) when we get there," said Albertson. "We could have saved Danny for Berwick and then lost this game. We still have Matt (Jensen) and Michael (Smith) to come back and it might rain. We wanted to win this game, that was our No. 1 goal."

Winnie fanned two in the sixth and then two more in the seventh to secure the win for Shultz.

Shultz and Winnie needed to be solid on the mound because Danville's red-hot offense -- which had scored 65 runs in its first five games -- was held in check by Selinsgrove lefty Paul Eyster.

A night after putting up 17 runs on 16 hits, Post 40 managed just four hits off Eyster. Fortunately, two of them came at the absolutely right time.

Winnie, who was 5-for-5 in two of the last three games, hit a two-run single over a drawn-in infield in the third. Then in the fourth, Jake Gronsky lined a two-out, full-count double to the fence in right to plate Matt Jensen with the eventual game-winner.

"This was a big win for us," said Albertson. "We needed to win a game like this, a tight one where we didn't have our offense in gear. This is huge."
