H.S. cross country: Danville sets records, sweeps meet

By The Daily Item

DANVILLE -- The strength of Danville's cross country teams shined through Tuesday as the Ironmen broke course records and overwhelmed the boys and girls fields in a meet that featured five teams.

Tyler Vella led a contingent of six Ironmen who finished in the first seven spots in the boys' race, while sophomore Mackenzie Jones fronted a sweep of the first four girls' places. Both shattered their home course standards.

The Ironmen easily swept Lewisburg, Loyalsock, Shamokin and Southern Columbia -- the latter three by 15-50 scores on both sides. Danville defeated Lewisburg's boys 18-45, and topped the Green Dragons girls 17-44.

Vella's winning time of 17 minutes, 17 seconds was 19 seconds better than the previous Danville course mark held by Aaron Valorosa. The senior finished nearly a minute ahead of teammate Joe Malafronte (18:02) in second place.

Lewisburg's Nick Scullen (18:24) broke up the parade of Ironmen by placing third. A Danville quartet followed -- Brett Vandenheuvel (18:42), Hunter Klena (18:44), Alex Mettler (18:48), Addison Zakarian (18:50) -- to round out the top seven boys. Tyler Walters (19:06, ninth) also cracked the top 10 for the Ironmen.

Lewisburg bunched Anthony Bach (19:07), Alden Davidson (19:09) and Nick Alico (19:12) in places 10 through 12.

Dayne Wetzel was Southern Columbia's top finisher (18:58, eighth), while Noah Rachau was first across for Shamokin (19:21, 15th).

In all, 19 boys broke 20 minutes.

On the girls side, Danville's Jones (20:36) slashed 36 seconds off her own course mark. She was followed by teammates Emily Haney (21:24), Maddie Messa (21:59) and Hannah Maize (21:59).

Lewisburg's Jordan Hartzel (22:22) and Allison Graham (22:32) were fifth and sixth, respectively, breaking up a cluster of eight Ironmen in the top 10.

Danville's Abigail Raup (22:56), Monica Amarante (23:06), Abby Sees (23:07) and Katie Maffei (23:16) were in a tight group in seventh through 10th.

Katie Edwards (23:25, 11th) and Rachel Ziegler (24:10, 12th) were just outside the top 10 for Lewisburg. Samantha Carpenter was Shamokin's top finisher (24:45, 15th), while Emily Eck crossed first for Southern Columbia (24:52, 17th).
