PA's Lincoln contest will give $5K to best high school speech

HARRSIBURG -- The state Department of Education has extended to April 15 the deadline to get into “In Lincoln’s Footsteps,” a speech contest that will award the high-school winner a $5,000 scholarship, among other prizes.

"Footsteps” is open to all Pennsylvania public, parochial, private, charter or home school students who will be entering grades 10-12 in the 2013-14 school year.

The winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship, professional speech presentation training and an all-expense paid trip to Gettysburg for Dedication Day 2013 to deliver the winning speech at the official Dedication Day ceremony Nov. 19.

The winner’s school will receive a collection of Gettysburg/Lincoln-related books and a banner recognizing the education entity and its winner.

Participation is aligned with Pennsylvania’s Common Core academic standards; educators may incorporate it into classrooms to use as a teaching tool.

This year, marks the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The contest is part of the historical celebration, according to the Department of Education.

“President Lincoln holds a special place in the history of Pennsylvania, and this contest is way for today’s students to learn about the significance his contributions have had throughout our nation,” Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis said Wednesday.
