Shamokin band takes third in championships
Drum major honored; nine named to all-star group

HERSHEY — The Shamokin High School competition band placed third overall in the Tournament of Bands Group II Atlantic Coast Open Invitational Championships held Sunday in Hersheypark Stadium.

The band received a plaque for its accomplishment. The competition is sponsored by the Tournament of Bands and the National Judges Association.

The band is composed of volunteers from the high school instrumental program. It is under the field leadership of drum major Joshua Druckenmiller, who was named best drum major in the Group II Open Invitational Category.

Shamokin senior Abby Kulengusky was awarded the Tournament of Bands Group II Scholarship.

The band’s 2009 competition show is titled “Fire.” It is a four-movement production exploring the various aspects of fire, band director Kevin Styer said. The show opens to the intense strains of Gary Gilroy’s “Fire,” followed by Manuel De Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance.” The pace of the show slows with “Fire of Eternal Glory,” written by Dmitri Shostakovich. The show closes to the strains of Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird.”

Mark Shultz, Joshua Druckenmiller, Kasi Ristine, Anthony Holobovich, Persephine Wywadis, Carissa Carsto, Desaree Ignaszewski, Karin Clark and Courtney Krieger were recognized on the field for their selection for the Tournament of Bands All-Star Band, which will premiere on Thanksgiving Day at the ABC6/IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. They were selected through an application process.

Other staff members are Sharon Styer, assistant director; Dan Shuman, marching instructor; Beth Gensemer, guard instructor; Kevin Haile, percussion instructor; Kyle Krieger, Tim Bradley and Shane Kozar, percussion assistants; and Mark Boyer, drill designer.
