Former Port Trevorton man drowns

PUTTSTOWN -- A former Port Trevorton man drowned during a church outing at Raystown Lake on Friday, according to authorities in Huntingdon County.

They said they found the body of Benjamin Carr, 23, son of Dr. Timothy L. and Karen Carr of Port Trevorton, just after 8 p.m. Friday.

The search crews and dive teams worked for more than eight hours before finding Mr. Carr's body.

Huntingdon County Deputy Coroner Timothy Skipper ruled Mr. Carr's death as an accident.

Mr. Carr was staying at Heritage Cove Campground with a church group when he tried to swim across the southern portion of the lake. The lake is about 100 yards wide at that point. Witnesses told authorities Mr. Carr became tired and yelled for help as he was about halfway across, but a bystander was unable to save him.

Mr. Carr, of Montpelier, Vt., graduated cum laude from Eastern University, Philadelphia, with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy.

He was a member of the Templeton Honors College and was senior editor of the Waltonian, the school newspaper. He also studied philosophy at New College, Oxford University, England. Mr. Carr studied journalism in Washington, and reported for The Daily Item of Sunbury before joining The Northfield News and Transcript, Northfield, Vt., as managing editor.
