Former women's pro baseball player to speak at state boroughs group conference

DANVILLE — DANVILLE — A Columbia County woman who played professional baseball will be the keynote speaker for the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs’ annual conference and exhibition in May at the Hershey Lodge.

Sarah Jane “Salty” Sands Ferguson will speak on “From Bat Girl to Pro” during the opening general session May 5.

The theme of the conference and exhibition is “The American Dream.”

Presiding will be Betty Ann Moyer, long-time Danville Borough Council member and association president.

Moyer had a planning meeting with Ferguson; Christopher Cap, association executive vice president; Jeffrey Heishman, association deputy executive vice president; and Mary Weller of the association, Monday at The Pine Barn Inn.

Ferguson, of the Orangeville area, began her career at age 7 as a bat girl for the local men’s baseball team. She played two years, in 1953-54, with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) for the Rockford Peaches.

She appeared in the movie “A League of Their Own” and has attended the opening of the AAGPBL exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

She was inducted in her high school’s graduates of distinction and was chosen a Columbia-Montour Counties Woman of the Year. She has served as grand marshal at numerous parades and has opened many ballgames from Little League to AAA pro-baseball teams.

Moyer will preside over the conference, including the annual banquet, which continues through May 8.
