Rivals close season with HAC crossover

— ALMEDIA — Even with two straight losses, Central (3-6, 2-6 HAC-II) is looking to rebound against its backyard rival Bloomsburg.

The Heartland Athletic Conference cross-over game will bring to a close the first season with the renovations at Blue Jays Stadium.

“I was happy with the effort, but we could have executed better. “But that’s how good Southern is and we were one of the teams to keep them under 50 points this year,” Central coach Jason Hippenstiel said.

The injury bug hit the Blue Jays again as their running back, Danny Koch, has a chipped bone in his hand.

“He’s a two-way starter and our best corner,” Hippenstiel said. “It’s hard not having him in the lineup. He was in a cast last week and it will be a doctor’s and game-time decision if he can play.”

Central, which will not make the playoffs this year, also missed out on the post-season two years ago.

“The game carries playoff implications for Bloomsburg and it’s really a playoff game for us with not going to the playoffs this year,” he said.

The key for Central is to keep the Panthers’ offense off the field as much as possible.

“The less touches Bloomsburg has, the better shape we will be in,” Hippenstiel said.

“We don’t need a whole lot of extra motivation to make Bloomsburg and Central interesting,” he added.

Bloomsburg comes into the game having lost two of its last three including last week’s road lost to Danville, 31-23.

The Panthers are 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the HAC-III and need to win for a chance at a District 4 Class A playoff berth.
