Firefighters battle midnight blaze in Danville

DANVILLE — Firefighters rushed to a midnight fire at a house along DL&W Avenue early Wednesday morning.

The house was located at the corner of DL&W and an unnamed street, across from the Giant supermarket on Church Street. Emergency workers believed everyone was safely evacuated from the house, said John Moyer, deputy chief of Danville’s fire department. Moyer did not have an address for the house at the time of response.

As of about 12:30 a.m., Moyer did not know what caused the fire and didn’t know the name of the house’s owner.

Firefighters had to use an axe to chop down the fence surrounding the house in order to run a hose to battle the flames.

Danville Fire Department, East End Fire Department, Danville Fire Police and Danville Ambulance responded to the scene. Moyer said nobody that he knew of required medical attention.

Vikki Bagdoyan, of 358 Church Street, was awoken by firefighters along with her two sons, 13-year-old Chris and 12-year-old Alex. Bagdoyan, who lives near the burning house, said she and several neighbors on Church Street and Lower Mulberry were told to evacuate their homes while firefighters worked. The Bagdoyans and their golden retriever, Casey, were sitting on the corner of Church Street while firefighters worked.
