Ride across Valley to benefit Danville police

DANVILLE — Motor enthusiasts of all stripes will be touring across the Valley this weekend in support of the Danville Police Department.

The benefit is being organized by the Montour Motorcycle Riders group and will take place July 14, starting at the Smokehouse Bar and Grill. Registration will take place at Smokehouse from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with the ride starting at noon. The cost is $20 per vehicle, which includes a meal at the restaurant at the end of the trip.

“All vehicles are welcome. If you want to support the police department and you want to come out in your pick-up truck, sports car or regular car, it doesn’t matter,” said Marie Bleiler, of the Montour Motorcycle Riders. “We welcome all types of people.”

The ride’s route is still being finalized, said Ted Bunnell, president of the group. While the ride will occur rain or shine, he wants to see if the weekend’s predicted severe thunderstorms have the chance of closing off any streets.

The route will start and end at Smokehouse, and will go through Montour and its surrounding counties, he said. “It will be at least 75 miles.”

Drivers will ride in a stagger formation, with all of them leaving and returning together. As much driving as possible will be done on country roads, said Bleiler. “We try to do as much scenic riding as we can.”

While the Montour Motorcycle Riders have held benefit events before, this is the first time they have supported the Danville Police Department.

“The police department is in need of some equipment that they don’t have the finance for. They’ve been very supportive of our group, blocking intersections and making sure our rides are as safe as possible,” said Bleiler. “They have a tough job, as do most police departments.”
