Nameless donor helps fund Eagle Scout project for homeless shelter

DANVILLE — A donor has covered the remaining money needed for an Eagle Scout’s $4000 pavilion construction at the Gate House homeless shelter.

Mark Hilkert, 16, of Danville’s Troop 39, had previously raised about $850 from a spaghetti dinner hosted on June 2 at the St. Joseph School cafeteria. He made approximately $400 more in donations and had been planning to contact local businesses for financial assistance before he met with his donor on June 13. His new donor, who did not wish to be publicly named, covered the remaining cost of approximately $2750.

Mark said he is very thankful for their assistance in completing the project, which will give Gate House residents a place to hold get-togethers and cook outs.

“I figured this would be a worthy organization to come to first,” said Mark of the Gate House. Not a lot of Eagle projects consider the Gate House, he said, and instead focus on organizations they are already a part of, such as sports groups or churches.

Mark’s inspiration for aiding the Gate House came from helping out a fellow scout with a previous Eagle project, where he helped lay new linoleum flooring in the Gate House. When it came time for his Eagle project, he spoke with Gate House director Tom Dougher about what he could do to help. Dougher suggested pavilion, which will be 16 feet by 20 feet with a concrete pad underneath it on which to place tables. A three by five foot concrete pad to place the Gate House’s gas grill will be constructed adjacent to the pavilion.

Mark expects to have the pavilion’s frame up and ground leveled by the end of August. He hopes to have the project finished by the end of September or beginning of October.
