After 33 years, Montour veteran properly honored

STRAWBERRY RIDGE — Veteran Lloyd Bunch wanted the military service of a fellow veteran recognized more fully.

He had noticed the grave in the cemetery of Trinity United Church of Christ at Strawberry Ridge was missing a headstone.

Only a small metal marker and an American flag were on the grave of Donald Dwain Shires, a Navy ensign. Shires was born in 1938 and died in 1971.

Bunch, of Derry Township, saw the Shires grave while visiting the graves of the grandparents of his late wife, Pattie Bunch.

He contacted the Montour County Veterans Affairs Office which handled the paperwork for the stone to be made.

“For 33 years, there was only a metal marker there,” said Bunch, who served with the Army following the Korean Conflict.
