— VALLEY TWP. — Plans are in the works to form a regional sewer authority, Valley Township solicitor Robert Buehner Jr. told township supervisors Wednesday night.

A meeting was held Tuesday about a regional authority. “It looks like it will move forward with Cooper Township, Riverside and Mahoning Township. I believe the Valley Authority supports it,” said Buehner who also serves as solicitor for the Valley Township Municipal Authority.

“It looks like the entities will join together. We are still trying to work out the possibility of going to Danville,” he said of the part of Valley Township which has municipal sewage services connecting to Danville’s sewage treatment plant.

The part of Cooper Township which will be getting municipal sewer was proposed to connect to the Danville system.

He said the Danville Municipal Authority is still maintaining the same position it had regarding what it wants for connection fees and costs from the township.

“If a new regional authority is created, it may be a cost-savings for common billing, collecting and maintenance,” Buehner said.

The Danville authority and Danville Borough Council recently voted to opt out of a plan to regionalize sewage systems. The Danville officials said they saw no benefit to Danville residents to regionalize.

Buehner previously said the Danville authority wants Valley Township to pay about $950,000 to connect to the system and to also pay rates calculated by the Danville authority.

Montour County’s commissioners previously said they were disappointed with the Danville vote.

About three years ago, the commissioners organized a sewer summit meeting after receiving a request from a Mahoning Township official on the possibility of forming a regional sewer authority.

Mahoning Township and Riverside currently use the Danville system.
