Local Catholic leaders praise pope's "Person of the Year" award

— DANVILLE – Local Catholic leaders are thrilled with Pope Francis being named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.”

“I saw the list of people they were looking at, and certainly I thought Francis stood out among all of them,” said Sister Michael Ann, general superior of the Sisters of Saint Cyril and Methodius. In choosing the pope, Time referenced his willingness to address controversial issues such as wealth disparity and his embrace of the weak and poor, among both Catholics and non-Catholics.

“He has been a role model in really giving the message of Jesus, the gospel message, to the poor. He’s reached out to the marginalized and has been a wonderful role model to everyone,” Ann said. “He has definitely brought the church to the forefront in the 21st century in a positive manner.”

“I think (the award) is very appropriate,” said Sister Donna Marie, principal of Saint Cyril and Methodius’ kindergarten and pre-school. “I think he has made quite an impression with not only Catholics but the world as well. I think he’s truly a pastoral pope, a shepherd, and I think everybody admires him.”
